People who've read or heard my children's stories and short fairytales, often ask where my ideas for these stories come from.
They'll ask the source or sources of my inspiration for the plots, and whether or not I begin with an idea of the moral or lesson I want the story to teach. In attempting to answer their questions, I've had to reflect on and describe a creative process, which has always come as naturally to me as breathing. Even as a child I made up stories first for my younger brother, then later for my children.
My most recent stories originated in response to a request from my granddaughter.
While visiting my daughter, three years ago, my granddaughter happened to ask her mother to tell her a story. To which my daughter replied, " ask Amma. She tells the best stories.
" And thus, my most recent foray into creating short fairy tales and stories for children began.
Because she had as many toys as their small house could hold, for Christmas, I gave her a book of four of the stories I'd told her, with blank pages and colored pens so she could add her own illustrations.
As for how I invent these stories: Sometimes the subject of the story or short fairy tale is in response to a child asking for a story about a given character or characters. Other-times it's in response to a request for a given kind of story; such as a scary story, silly story, or an adventure. A child may ask for the type of story he or she wants to hear as well as picking the story's subject.
My granddaughter, who seems to identify with Goldilocks, often asks for an adventure story about her.
These are a few methods I've used when creating a story: Once a child requests a story, in order to give myself a little extra time while waiting for the story idea, I say, "Let's get cozy and be really quiet for a minute. That way I can listen until the story comes into my head." I then let my eyes become unfocused while still remaining alert.
I allow them to drift from one object to another as I scan the contents of my environment. I watch for something to attract my eye.
You will find that as you try this it gets easier and easier to do.
If your telling your story outdoors let yourself notice the shape of a cloud, or if a particular tree, rock or flower attracts your attention.
If you're inside, do the same with the objects you see in the room's interior.
Let your mind be open and relaxed. Slow your thoughts by watching them as they slide into your consciousness like answers in an 8 ball.
Become aware of any images, or thoughts that come to you.
For example, if you're outside you might pick up a rock. Examine its shape and colors. Does the texture remind you of anything?.
Ask yourself "what does this shape make me think of? Could it be an animal? What kind of being does this make me think of?" You might notice a cloud, or tree, or something else.
You can do the same thing with whatever attracts your attention.
By paying attention to the thoughts and associations you have with the world around you, you will more easily stimulate your imagination.
Let the item you've chosen inform the direction and subject of your story.
For example, my story, "The Little Christmas Tree," was triggered when, after Christmas, I glanced around the living room and noticed the Christmas tree.
My short fairy tale, "The Bull Headed King," was inspired when I noticed a cube of butter on the kitchen table. Finally, when asked what inspires the moral or lesson of a story, I respond that for me the story's moral is usually a spontaneous outgrowth of the plot.
Once you've allowed the object and type of story to trigger your imagination, the story will flow through you.
Like a tap that has been turned on, when you've opened to the storyteller within, you may find your self as well, as your audience spellbound listeners, enchanted by the same magic.

My Teen Wants A Credit Card, Should They Get One?
The answer to this question could be good or bad for your teen.
The outcome would depend on if your teen is responsible, and would have the ability to pay a credit card bill they may receive in a timely manner.
By doing that, your teen will be on a path to building good credit for the future.
However, if your teen is, or decides to become irresponsible by running up their credit card balances by not paying their bill, this could result in a negative credit history early in their life.
You wouldn't want your teen to be subjected to this.
So here are some tips and information on whether or not your teen should get that credit card: 1) My teen just started college and just received his new credit card in the mail with a credit line of $500, how should he use this card? First, your teen needs to be responsible with his new credit card and ensure that his payments will be made on time to establish a good payment and credit history. Your teen will also want to keep his credit card charges to a minimum as well! 2) Should my teen apply for more than one credit card? Yes.
Your teen should consider applying for two credit cards.
However, make sure your teen pays their monthly credit card balance in full and timely! 3) Why are credit card companies so hungry to get my teen to sign up for a credit card? Usually, when your teen starts college, the credit card companies know that your teen doesn't have a credit card and will probably need a card to make purchases on or off campus.
They also figure that your teen will most likely pay the minimum payment due.
If your teen lets the balance on their credit card increase over time, then the credit card company gets to collect all that interest from your teen! 4) What if my teen's credit card balance gets too high, what should I do? If that happens, you may be stuck paying your teen's debt! Some credit card companies love this.
That means they may get all of their money sooner if the credit card is paid off by the parent.
Teach your teen to be responsible for paying off their credit card balance each month.

Motivating Teenagers Begins With Motivated Parents
When it comes to motivating teenagers it really does begin with the parents. To be sure, raising children is quite a challenge.
By the time the children reach adolescence parents have already undergone many changes, emotions and frightening moments.
But the teenage years really raises the bar.
It requires a new level of commitment from the parents to see those teenagers through.
Here are some things that you as parents of teenagers must consider as you seek to motivate your teens: Understand You Are Not the First Although it may be your first time raising one or more teenagers you must understand that there have been literally millions and millions and millions of other parents who have done the same thing. It is one of those common problems that all parents face.
If it is your first time it is perfectly natural to be nervous, maybe even scared.
That's because this is new ground for you. You have not been here before.
Because of this you will do what comes naturally which takes us to the next item.
Seek the Advice of Other Parents with Teenagers Almost without fail parents of teenagers will seek out other parents of teenagers.
They will share stories and exchange ideas for parenting.
This is really good because collectively all of them are going through the same kind of experiences.
When you think about it, as a group of parents your teenagers are going through high school together.
This means you will have shared experiences in terms of your teenage students dealing with teachers, dealing with their classmates, and dealing with the changes of adolescence.
As a group of parents having the shared experience, you can give and receive support and encouragement.
Not only can you can take comfort in the knowledge you are not the first parents dealing with this, but you are part of a larger group of parents who are now entering into these experiences.

Since then we've seen a major network breaches of Google and several other Fortune 500 type companies, the compromise of Defense Department networks, the spread of the Stuxnet worm causing havoc in Iranian nuclear facilities, denial-of-service attacks over WikiLeaks, various suspected Russian and Chinese hacks into business and government networks, plus Tunisian and Egyptian shut downs of the internet, and more. To be fair to President Obama, he has been proactive regarding cybersecurity.
He has appointed a cybersecurity coordinator, established a military cyber command and initiated national strategies for trusted identity and incident response.
In addition, The Commerce Department is supporting deployment of the DNS Security Extensions protocols to secure the Internet's Domain Name System.
And, a team also is updating the Comprehensive National Cyberspace Initiative, established by President Bush in the previous administration.
A few days ago, The White House released a progress report highlighting these and other accomplishments to secure cyberspace in response to last year's Cyberspace Policy Review. Despite the fact that the Obama administration has made some real progress, security experts counter that there is still much to be done. Among the accomplishments noted in the White House progress report is the new guidance from the Office and Management and Budget for complying with the Federal Information Security Management Act.
This places a major focus on real-time awareness instead of retrospective static assessments.
A National Incident Response Plan is currently in final draft and will be tested, as part of the Cyber Storm III, and revised based on lessons learned from that exercise.
A National Strategy for Trusted Identity in Cyberspace has been released for public comment with the expectation of a final draft being released prior to the end of 2011.
National Security Presidential Directive 54 and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 23, established The Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) which defines key cybersecurity roles and responsibilities within various parts of the government.

And this makes me realize that we really don't have to focus on our differences but our likeness. Yes, we're all one and the same workers for peace, love and progress.

Summer - The Perfect Time to Teach Kids Responsible Dog Ownership
All too often, dog trainers receive calls from panicked "first time" dog owners. They have a new puppy or dog, but don't have a clue with what to do with it! Some claim they never had a dog as a child. Others admit they did, but they were never responsible for the pet.

Avoid the Summer Slide by Making the Most of Summer - Combine Fun and Learning!
Summertime is here, and so are all the camps, beach visits, video games, and parties for the kids. But along with all this fun that the summer brings, it also brings the "summer slide" - a dreaded phenomenon, which parents and educators acknowledge alike, but are at a loss on how to arrest it!
According to the National Summer Learning Association, an average student loses about 2 months of learning over the summer, even more in the case of low income group families, and most if it affects reading and math.
Educators realize that besides all the fun, students need to make sure they stay on top of class for next year, and for this, they need to refresh what they learnt in the previous year and take a preview of what can be expected once they get back to school. Parents realize that kids need to be better prepared and really do well in academics to secure their future.

A Parent's Guide To Algebra's Basic Concepts - What Is Algebra?
It seems appropriate that a series of articles intended to help parents better understand Algebra's basic concepts should begin with a definition of Algebra or some kind of discussion of what Algebra is.
What I discovered is that this is easier said than done.
Over the years I have taught out of several different textbook series both in high school and in college and I have evaluated many other Algebra texts, and one characteristic they share is the lack of an understandable explanation of what Algebra is or does. I asked Google the question "What is Algebra?" Result? Not one meaningful answer. I headed to the dictionary and found one response that includes some truth: A generalization of arithmetic in which letters representing numbers are combined according to the rules of arithmetic.
So, do you understand what Algebra is now based on that? I didn't think so.
It is actually kind of funny (funny ha ha, funny odd, and funny sad) that there seems to be no agreed upon definition of Algebra or even a generalized understanding of what Algebra is, and yet every high school across this country offers a course in Algebra. So maybe the more appropriate question should be "What do these courses cover?" If all the courses cover the same topics, then at least part of the answer is there.
I'll came back to this idea later.
I could just tell you my definition of Algebra, but I know that you will have a much better understanding of Algebra if you create the image in your own brain. You and I both know that "being told" does not lead to long-term retention.
I am about to help you create in your mind two different images for understanding Algebra. Hopefully, at least one of these images with be the "light bulb" for you.

Most likely, as you read that number, an image comes into your mind.
Maybe on a ruler, or sewing a hem, or something completely different. For me, at this moment in time, the number 3/8" is bringing into my head the picture of the new Hoover Dam ByPass Bridge.
This bridge, which just opened this past October, 2010, is the culmination of many recommendations dating back to 1968, 28 different studies, the 9/11 attacks showing the Hoover Dam as a major target, years of research into earthquake concerns, years of construction starting Feb.
, 2005, a wind gust accident in 2006, and a construction fatality in 2008.
But, in 2009, after starting concrete footers on opposite sides of the river 1060 feet apart, and working from both sides at the same time, the arch of the bridge slowly came together--almost. Amazingly, the two parts met with an error of only 3/8 of an inch! To fully understand just how amazing this is, understand that many manufacturing companies are thrilled with a 1% error. On this bridge, a 1% error would have been 10.6 inches.
They considered being off by half an inch to be perfect, but they were even closer than that! Incredible. The bridge is now complete and is as much of an engineering marvel as is the Hoover Dam.
(When do we get to the Algebra part? Right now. Although weren't the statistics great? You just have to appreciate math even if you don't love it.) As I look at pictures of this bridge, I see layers of mathematics.
On top, I see Calculus in the issues of wind stresses, weight stresses, necessary strength, and earthquake stresses.
Under that, I see Trigonometry in all of the angles and distances that couldn't actually be measured by hand.
Under that, I see Geometry--so much Geometry! Angles, triangles, and curves everywhere you look.
Not to mention 30,000 cubic yards of concrete (volume). So much Geometry! And supporting it all is Algebra.
Algebra is the set of basic skills making all of the others possible.
The final picture I'd like you to put in your brain is a very long line--similar to a time line. On the extreme left end of the line, put a mark and label it "learning to count." Then, as you move to the right on the line, add marks and labels for "understanding numbers," "addition." subtraction," multiplication," "division," fractions," "decimals," and "percents.
" Now draw a very long bracket across the top of everything you just listed and add a label to the bracket that says ARITHMETIC.
Now, continue to extend your mental line to the right. (The actual order of the topics will depend on the textbook used.) You will continue to mark and label with items like evaluating expressions, operating with expressions, solving equations, numbers systems, properties, linear equations, quadratic equations, graphing equations, and so on. When we have listed every skill needed for the next level of mathematics, we can then add that bracket with its label--ALGEBRA.
Hopefully you see that Algebra is not really a "thing" to be defined. Just as Arithmetic is a set of basic skills for the math courses that follow, so to is Algebra.
And while the textbooks mentioned earlier seemed not to provide a written definition or understanding of Algebra, what they do share is the basic skills needed for all of the math to follow.
